Code of Conduct

mulfrica is a project that aims to promote equality within a system that is notoriously unequal. To achieve this goal, we must confront the structural discrimination that permeates our industry and the world at large. Our principles, processes, and guidelines reflect our commitment to this mission. We strive to maintain an environment that is welcoming to all those who interact with us in good faith and to positively impact the lives of our community members.

This code of conduct is divided into three sections. The first section outlines the ideals that underpin all interactions within mulfrica. The second section specifies types of behavior that are not acceptable. The third and final section describes how to report problems so that we can take appropriate measures to ensure a safe and healthy environment at mulfrica.

This policy applies to all of the following contexts:

  • The mulfrica offices
  • All internal and external meetings, including assemblies and the partners council
  • All mailing lists, bug trackers, wikis, and other online services
  • mulfrica-sponsored social gatherings, such as summits
  • mulfrica-hosted conferences, hackathons, and other public and private events
  • Any time when a person is representing mulfrica, including sponsored external events, communities, or using a company email address.

Expected Behavior

Respect and Kindness Assume that others are competent and doing their best. Look out for one another and offer help when appropriate and welcome. Choose your words carefully, as they can carry different meanings across countries, cultures, and communities. If you are uncertain about something’s appropriateness, it is best to keep it to yourself. Be quick to apologize and learn from your mistakes.

Inclusivity Encourage all voices and amplify new points of view. Listen actively and be mindful of the dominant members of the group. When repeating ideas and suggestions, give credit to the person who introduced them. Provide alternative ways to contribute when possible.

Understanding and Consensus

Discussion and debate are essential to mulfrica, but winning disagreements should not be the goal. Encourage constructive discussions and inclusive thinking that involve a broad range of perspectives. Reject intolerance and the dehumanization of others.

Speaking Up

Creating a safe environment is everyone’s responsibility. If you believe that something violates the code of conduct, speak up.

Unacceptable Behavior

Inappropriate Conduct

It’s impossible to list every type of inappropriate conduct, but generally, conduct that’s committed with harmful intent, causes harm or distress, or continues after requests to stop is unacceptable. Even actions taken without malice can be inappropriate. If you’re unsure, take responsibility for your actions, apologize, and move forward. Remember, reporting a violation of the code of conduct is never a violation of the code of conduct.

Reporting

There are several ways that you can report behavior that makes you or others feel unsafe, unwelcome, or excluded. These include:

People reported as violating the code of conduct will not take part in the process of handling that report. After the report, immediate action will be taken to ensure the safety and well-being of those involved.
